Nathaniel Trost, Henry Barrett Memorial Award and Presser Award

Majors: Bachelor of Music in music composition and Bachelor of Arts in studio art (concentration in sculpture and ceramics)

Minor: Blount Scholars Program

Hometown: Tuscaloosa, AL

Favorite Experience at UA: My very first semester on campus, I attended a panel discussion titled “Why Nott” about the legacy of eugenicist Josiah C. Nott, after whom the Honors College was then named. This talk and the issues of memorialization and the contemporary power of history set the stage for my time at UA. It made me think more critically about the responsibilities of the university through its history to its current faculty, staff, and students.

Favorite Class: Dr. Amir Zaheri has been my guide and mentor through UA. Their composition lessons have been the foundation for everything else I have learned. Dr. Zaheri has juggled administrative responsibilities with a deep concern for the integrity of their teaching. From driving the composition studio halfway across the country for conferences to standing up for diversity in every way imaginable in the Music School, Dr. Zaheri has set high standards for compassion and dedication that I hope to live up to.

Future Plans: I hope to work on farms in Eastern Europe and Central Asia before attending architecture school.
